Kunekune
Spotted at Ambury Regional Park. The KuneKune is thought to have its early origins in Asia arriving in New Zealand in the early 1800's possibly as a consequence of barter exchanges between Maori and whalers. They are relatively small and highly distinctive, characterized physically by a short-legged, dumpy build, pot tummy, short upturned nose, and a generally fat, rounded appearance. Kunekunes come in a wide range of colours
DNA analyses suggest a likely phylogenetic relationship with Asian domestic pigs, but not with Pacific Island pigs.(Kune Kune in Maori = plump.)
