I've only ever seen one American before, and just looking at photos, the stripes on the neck with both species are fairly variable, and they really aren't that different looking! So what you saw in person could be more helpful :) Glad to help, and awesome that it was new for you!

Yeah, looking at photos closer, I guess it could be a Least! How cool - I've never seen one before. Thanks for the correction.

Are you sure this is an American bittern? They aren't supposed to be there this time of year. And I'm having trouble with how this individual looks, could go either least or American with it, but am leaning more towards least. But you saw it in person, what was the size? I know it's common for leasts to get up on cattails like this, not sure if Americans do it too much?
