Black Witch Moth

Ascalapha odorata

Description:

Large dark-colored moth with wingspan ~ 13 cm.

Habitat:

Suburban area on a mesic, tropical, insular lowland plateau.

Notes:

Spotted on my sliding screen door. My view was from the inside, so the moth was backlit. My camera failed to flash, so I got a silhouette (second picture of two). Finally, I illuminated the moth with a flashlight (the first picture of two), but mostly I lit up the screen, not the moth, and what I did get was ventral coloration whereas dorsal would have been better. I tried to wait until the sun went down to get my flash to work, but managed to scare the moth off while framing a picture.
