Mountain Soldier Beetle

Chauliognathus deceptus

Description:

Black Soldier Beetle, about 1 cm long, with orange edging around the pronotum and two orange stripes down the outer, upper edges of the elytra. Fine hairs cover the elytra. This beetle was found frequently on small yellow composite flowers growing in a lawn (see last 2 pictures). Family Cantharidae.

Habitat:

Semi-urban area, San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, 2,200 meters, highland alpine-oak forest.
