Gulf Fritillary

Agraulis vanillae

Description:

Medium sized butterfly with elongated forewings. Bright orange with black markings on above parts of wings. Three black-rimmed white spots on each forewing. Underside of wings have elongated silvery spots (sorry, this one didn't give me a shot of the underside of the wings).

Habitat:

Rested for a moment on some plants next to a man-made freshwater "lagoon".

Notes:

I saw a few of these over the two days we spent on Hilton Head Island. Most of them didn't land at all or long enough for a picture.

I know, Alice. Though, there were some blooming plants, mostly in yards of the homes in the area. Not sure how insect friendly most of them were.
The wild plants were mostly dormant or on the way to dormant.
