Birch Polypore Fungus

Piptoporus betulinus

Description:

Length: 3.5 inches long (8.8 cm) Also called Birch bracket. This very common polyporus fungus only grows on birch trees. This fungus is not an aggressive tree killer, but a tree decomposer that produces its spores from pores and not gills.

Habitat:

Open woodlands. State park. Deciduous and conifer trees.

Notes:

Beltzville State Park near a small brook and large lake. On a rotted Paper Birch tree.
