Pileated Woodpecker

Dryocopus pileatus

Description:

Large red-capped woodpecker common to the area but illusive and difficult to photograph. Large red-capped woodpecker. Common to this area but very illusive and hard to photograph. This one was one of a pair that were enjoying my tree close to the house so getting any closer would not have resulted in a picture at all! I feel fortunate to have gotten this one . I was able to observe the second of the two only when this one flew off. In flight their wingspan is impressive!

Habitat:

Dense wooded areas, tall decaying trees.
