Osprey Tracks

Pandion haliaetus

Description:

Very similar to Eagle prints. Unlike other raptors, the Osprey has four equal toes. The outer one is reversible, enabling the bird to seize its prey with two toes pointing forwards and two pointing backwards. There is an Osprey that fishes in this area.

Habitat:

Damp edge of Lake Lewisville.

Notes:

Look for Ospreys around nearly any body of water: saltmarshes, rivers, ponds, reservoirs, estuaries, and even coral reefs. Their conspicuous stick nests are placed in the open on poles, channel markers, and dead trees, often over water.
