Angled castor

Ariadne ariadne

Description:

Spotted it on the plants near Whitefield railway station. It was almost hidden amidst the green cover of leaves i thought it might be a dried leave lying amidst other young ones. But somehow wanted to have a closer look and lucky enough to spot a castor for the first time. Castor butterfly: Gets its name as its larvae mostly feed on castor plant. 2 of the common castor species found in this region are common castor(Ariadne merione ) and angled castor(Ariadne ariadne) Both of them look very much alike. But on closer look , we can find few differences between the two like 1)in the Angled Castor, the transverse chestnut bands are narrower and less diffuse. 2)The margins of the Common Castor are less wavy. whereas in angled castor margins of the 4 wings are almost perfectly aligned to give the appearance of a wave starting from the antenna which travels towards outside of the body

Habitat:

Larvae mostly feed on castor plant. Seen in sub-urban areas, gardens

Notes:

You can have a look at http://www.treknature.com/gallery/Asia/I... as well
