Bee-like Robber Fly

Laphria sp.

Description:

Sneaky predator that mimics a bumble-bee. This one a found while picking wild black raspberries and I was surprised that it let me get in close. I've got to wonder though, does the bee mimicry disguise it from its victims or from predators that would eat it.

Habitat:

Wooded area next to a CRP patch with lots of flowers where it probably snagged its meal.
