White Dove

Columba livia domesticus

Description:

These originated from thousands of years ago when humans found that they could easily tame and breed the Columba livia and other similar species and create different plumages by selective breeding and feeding. All are labelled under the Columba livia species by being placed under Columba livia domesticus. A lot of them were interbred to form the pure white species and a large colony of these is in residence at Helican where they have been provided with several dovecotes. This one was perched on one of the dovecotes while several of its 'siblings' were perched in nearby trees. They are free to come and go as they wish but invariable return to feed and roost.

Habitat:

Country park.
