Spider Wasp

Auplopus sp.

Notes:

This wasp and its partner are regular visitors to our backyard pond. They are there so often I thought they might have built their nest somewhere around the pond but, if that's the case, I haven't been able to find the nest. Apparently these wasps hunt for spiders as their prey. This particular species looks very much like a mud-dauber wasp, but Peter Chew at Brisbane Insects has been advised by an expert that it is, in fact, in the Pompilidae family (see linked reference).
