Barbasco-Timiu

Lonchocarpus nicou

Description:

Called "Timiu" by the natives. Theoretically it can grow to 10m, but is usually harvested before it reaches 3 meters. It's leaves are up to 20-25 cm long and 6-8 cm wide.

Habitat:

Grown in villages in the Amazon rainforest of SE Ecuador to use for fishing. http://scielo.sld.cu/scielo.php?script=s...

Notes:

The roots are dug up, then smashed to open them up (foto #3). Then they are rinsed in the river you wish to poison for fishing purposes (foto #4). In large amounts the smashed roots will be placed in a woven basked and swished around in the stream until it stops leeching out. Sometimes a bamboo barricade will be made downstream to catch larger fish. In small streams they are caught by hand. It is extremely potent and will kill fish kilometers away. For this reason it is not used as frequently as the other type poison.
