Dark-eyed Junco

Junco hyemalis

Description:

Medium sized sparrow. Males seen here are a slate-gray color with a white belly and white outer tail feathers. Pink bill and legs. Females are a brown with a white belly and have similar white markings (see picture number 2). This species forms large flocks in the winter.

Habitat:

Wooded backyard in a neighborhood. Visiting the bird feeders.

Notes:

There is a wide range of regional color variations of this bird which can be confusing for identification.
