Mottled Sand Grasshopper

Spharagemon collare

Description:

Medium to large grasshopper, most evident in late summer and autumn. Highly variable in color and pattern, highly mottled. Note bright orange hind tibiae ("shins"). Common to abundant.

Habitat:

Found in weedy vacant lot in highly urbanized area near an office park.

Notes:

This is one of a handful of species in the genus Spharagemon that all seem to converge here in Colorado Springs and resemble each other closely. Identification provided by Dave Ferguson.
