A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Piezogaster calcarator
Fairly large insect. Males have thick hind femora ("thighs"), and kinked hind tibiae ("shins"). Usually found in groups on thistles or other low-growing weeds.
Found this one in a mixed coniferous and deciduous woodland, in a riparian corridor.
The genus has been revised several times and different species synonymized. Much work remains to be done to clarify this genus.
