Black Angus calf

Bos primigenius

Description:

Black Angus cattle are a breed of naturally hornless beef cattle; they were originally imported from Scotland in the late 1800s. The coloration of Scottish Angus cattle is exclusively black. Although a recessive gene sometimes produces an animal which is reddish in color, only the black animals may be certified Black Angus.

Habitat:

John Bunker Sands Wetland Center, Seagoville, Tx. These ideas reflect and extend the vision of Bunker Sands, a holistic ranch management advocate, who directed the creation of over 2,100 wetland acres on Rosewood Ranches properties in Kaufman, Henderson, Ellis, and Navarro counties. The constructed wetlands included seasonal emergent wetlands, scrub swamps and flooded bottomland hardwood forest. Several of the original wetlands occurred at Rosewood’s Seagoville Ranch, the site of the Center and of the East Fork Wetland Project, developed and operated by North Texas Municipal Water District.

Notes:

As we drove onto the ranch, I saw one of the cows standing apart from the other cattle. She was licking and nudging what looked like a small black mound in the middle of the field. By the time we left several hours later, Mom and her new baby had moved down to the treeline.
