Speyeria aphrodite
Fritillaries are the fastest disappearing Family (not just species) of butterflies in North America. Aphrodite differs from great spangled in that it doesn't have the large pale orange band at the outer margin of the hindwings exterior. Like most Fritillaries they need lots and lots of Wild Violets in order to survive making invasive plants especially damaging to their numbers.
Aprhodites are best seen in and around habitats that offer a mix of a good uncontaminated forests together with prairies and meadows.
Aphrodites and Great spangled will stop feeding and seek shelter in the during peak times of heat waves. During these times they are also strangely tolerant of people. Once the daily temperatures start to break around 5 pm they will then come out of their hiding places and venture out into sunny meadows and prairies for an early "dinner".
