Terathopius ecaudatus
The Bateleur is a colorful species with a very short tail, which makes it unmistakable in flight. The adult is 55-70 cm (21.5 -27.5 in) long with a 175 cm (5.75 ft) wingspan. Weight is 1.8-2.9 kg (4-6.5 lbs). The male has black plumage except for the chestnut mantle and tail, grey shoulders, and red facial skin, bill and legs. It takes them seven or eight years to reach full maturity.
Kruger National Park,
Thanks. I stared at some photos of bataleurs and then felt unsure. I appreciate the confirmation, Christy as I am a real amateur at bird ID even though I love them!
Beautiful!!! This one I AM sure of!! It is the only eagle in Africa (I think) with such a short tail!! They fascinate me!!!
