Bird-dropping Spider

Celaenia excavata

Description:

About 8mm wide, this little spider had a black cephalothorax and black and white legs with short spikey outgrowths, much like a crab's claw. The abdomen was white and ridged. It looked ery much like bir-dropping as it rested very still on an acacia leaf.

Habitat:

Acacia leaf - nature reserve

Notes:

The ridges on the triangular abdomen does look like minute skull & skeleton- giving this spider it's other name "death's head spider". I could not make out the legs initially and was convinced that this was a bit of bird poop, until I had a look at the photo later. It belongs to the family Araneidae.
