Manaia (Pot bellied seahorse)

Hippocampus abdominalis

Description:

The Pot bellied seahorse (Hippocampus abdominalis) is the only seahorse found around the New Zealand coastline, of the 35 species known worldwide. It reaches the 35 cm in lenght, and lives at a depth of around 100 metres, where it grasps onto seaweed with its tail. This dead Pot bellied seahorse was found washed ashore, at Lyall bay. It's about 12cm long, so it's probably a young female seahorse, wich was drifting on the sea, attached on a seaweed.
