Little Brown Skink (aka Ground Skink)

Scincella lateralis

Description:

This is one of the smallest reptiles in "North America, with a length of 3 - 5.5 inches (7.5 - 14.5 cm). Its back is typically a coppery brown color with a white or yellow underside, and like most skinks has an elongated body and short legs. Transparent disks in the lower eyelids allow it to see with its eyes closed (Beane 2006, Palmer et al. 1995)." - Wikipedia

Habitat:

Found basking on concrete steps in close proximity to forested area / abandoned field. Temperature around 80 degrees - on a dry, unseasonably warm spring day.

Notes:

The Little Brown Skink is one of the rarest reptiles in the state of Delaware, and I'm honored to have spotted this little guy. This was a first for me, and I will be keeping an eye out in the future to see how this population is doing. Not the best picture, but I felt the significance of this find was worthy considering where it was found.
