Lovebug

Plecia nearctica

Description:

Lovebugs are subject to some significant natural controls, such as various parasitic fungi, and dry weather—which dries out the thatch resulting in a higher mortality rate for the immatures.

Habitat:

Temperate, tropical. taiga, Savanna or grassland, chaparral, forest. They are especially partial to freshly cut lawns, animal pastures, and decaying vegetation. I found these specimens in a pasture in a mountainous region.

Notes:

Mating on my finger!
