Small Brown Mushrooms

Description:

These small brown mushrooms were growing on a tree trunk. They were small (approx 1 inch wide). Any help with an ID would be great.

Habitat:

Growing on tree along Crystal Springs Trail in Huddart County Park, Woodside, CA.

If they bled a thin milky white fluid when broken and smelled nicely like maple or fenugreek then I might guess candy caps.

I'm 'stumped' then! :D

Thanks rat.tumour aka lipase--the mushrooms were definitely growing on a live tree.

My guess is Tubaria furfuracea or a similar species. According to rogersmushrooms.com T. furfuracea grows on woody debris or wood chips, not on logs: http://www.rogersmushrooms.com/gallery/D...
