Caterpillar (likely moth). Chocolate Brown with white spots.
Deciduous forest in mildands of South Carolina. Trees nearby primarily include oak, hickory, elm, hackberry, sweet gum, and pine. Crawling on a dish with water at night.
This is likely in the the Owlet Moth Family (Noctuidae).

I agree ForestDragon. I believe that my caterpillar and the one that you posted from BugGuide are the same species. It must be in the Owlet moth group.
I found one other that looks a lot like yours on Bugguide (I saw that you have submitted yours there too). It's not ID'd either except it is in the Owlet Moths section. I hope you get an ID. It's very pretty!
