Slender Springtail

Entomobrya atrocincta

Description:

Tiny, yellow, brown and white, elongated insect with horizontal bands. There are two different color variations in this series. These were lo longer than 3 mm each. Slender Springtails have "an enlarged fourth abdominal segment and a well-developed furcula. Species in this family may be heavily scaled and can be very colourful." "Adult males are orange with a white "collar" and a transverse black thoracic band. Immature males lack the black band."

Habitat:

Citrus tree and rain gutter in backyard. These are widespread.

Notes:

Atrocincta means "black belt" and refers to the black band around the thorax of the adult male.

Thank you Maria. I was very surprised at how many of these were all around the yard. The two locations I shot these at were about 1/2 acre apart.
