Tropical Almond

Terminalia catappa

Habitat:

Wide spread through tropical regions as ornamental. In south FL, roadsides, parks, suburbs.

Notes:

The first pic (green) was taken Nov 2012, we hadn't had any cold weather yet. However when winter (the dry season) is in full swing here in Sunny South Florida, this is one of the few local trees that will turn colors and drop its leaves. The leaves turn bright red, yellowish, or brown. Pic 2 is the same tree today Jan 2013. In pic 3 you can see the flower stalk and the fruits. Growing up in Cuba we would collect the ripe fallen fruits and use rocks to smash them on the sidewalk to get the the "almond" in the center. It is not related to real almonds but it gets the name because the nut tastes just like almond.
