Fungus-growing Termite

Odontotermes badius

Description:

After a dry and hot spell, when rain comes, and the termites judge that conditions are right, winged reproductives take to the air in their thousands to establish new colonies. Today was one of those days! When they land, the wings are shed and a mate is sought to start the process to establish a new colony.
