Prairie ring-necked snake

Diadophis punctatus arnyi

Description:

It has a black or gray back with smooth scales and a gold belly with numerous spots. There is a bright gold or orange ring on the neck. The underside of the tail is usually red-orange. The prairie ring-necked snake has many irregularly-spaced black spots on the belly. (information from "A Field Guide to Oklahoma's Amphibians and Reptiles")

Habitat:

Rocky woodland with sandy substrate, adjacent to a large lake

Notes:

This species was found in the vicinity of flat-headed snakes and copperheads.
