American Coot

Fulica americana

Description:

We spotted these American Coots on a local suburban pond, here on Long Island, NY. They were so funny! They walked with their large, lobed feet (check them out; they look like palm trees) in an awkward way, and looked like they were smiling. I had never heard of this bird before--just beautiful.

Habitat:

Water bird.
