Four Toed Salamander

Hemidactylium scutatum

Description:

A young four toed salamander sitting on a dime. They migrate to the vernal pools on warm winter nights to lay eggs in the soft sphagnum moss. This one was found crossing the road in torrential rain.

Habitat:

Dense woods with temporary ponds and abundant sphagnum moss.
