That I'm in the process of. I've been on hundreds of hikes through the woods around my area and have never seen them, then I go across the road(an empty lot/woodland) and there it is! I agree, it's beautiful.
I highly doubt its an orchid, i transplanted this from across the road, and its a perennial, ground-cover. It will be there in spring, I'll have another spotting of this in 3-4 months.
From that distance I believe it's an orchid. It would be very helpful if you could go back and snap a flower close up. Canada has lots of native orchid species, and here there 's a nice catalog, wich contains information and pictures for every single one of them... http://www.osrbg.ca/orchid_native.html
