Horned Grebe

Podiceps auritus

Description:

The Horned Grebe is a small grebe with a straight bill, thick neck, and squarish head. It measures at 31–38 centimetres (12–15 in) long with a 46–55 centimetres (18–22 in) wingspan. This one is in non-breeding plumage and is gray-black with white on the lower half of the face and neck. The eye is red.

Habitat:

The Horned Grebe isn’t a good flyer but will migrate from its nesting grounds in Alaska and Canada to the south coasts of the United States. It is found on marshes during the summer and coastal bays in the winter. It is not usually found on fresh water. This one was photographed in the Mullet Pond at Huntington Beach State Park near Murrells Inlet, SC
