Cladonia cristatella
Coin sized plant clumped, gray stem with red bulb at tip.
Bull Hill NY, Hudson Highland, winter
Warm winter with moisture.
Thanks, makes sense because the area is littered with revolutionary war structures and artifacts. Its definitely my favorite plant in the area and I believe that this plant has a part in the Bull Hill Native American myth so I think of it as the 'Remains of the Bull'.
There are two types of lichen here. The red-capped lichen is indeed British Soldiers Lichen (Cladonia cristatella) as RiekoS suggests. The gray-green-white lichen is probably Star-tipped Reindeer Lichen (Cladina stellaris). See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cladonia_st... for more information on that lichen.
