Monarch

Pupa - Danaus plexippus

Description:

This shiny green pupa of the monarch butterfly has a row of golden beads along the top

Habitat:

This wild caught caterpillar has pupated on the drive home and has effectively migrated 1000 km south before it has even emerged as a butterfly.

Notes:

A dozen wild captured specimens are collected from wild stocks to reduce inbreeding of farmed stock. They are to be used for school kits and wedding releases. This specimen decided to pupate on a stick that I found with a cupmoth pupa on it.
