Chinese Mantid nymph

Tenodera aridifolia sinensis

Description:

Introduced species that has established itself. Bright green with hints of brown on the antennae, eyes and feet. Not fully grown. Modified front legs for grabbing and holding prey.

Habitat:

Suburban yard (on window screen).

Notes:

An old picture but still fun. This guy was not entirely cooperative, if I remember. I would love to find a native species of Mantid around here.

We see them here every year. I was looking through my pictures and found another adult Mantid of this species from 2011. I'll have to get that one up at some point as well. I don't know if there are any native species of Mantid that can survive up here, though there are reports of the Carolina Mantis in states nearby.

My area I didn't see wild ones for years, not many trees or shrubs. So that's why I tried to re-introduce and now I've seen about 5 and one layed an ootheca in my shrubs :)

It is a blessing to have these.

I think that is why they are so prevalent. They have established themselves here. I am quite sure of that. We have never bought egg cases but I found one (in my spottings) in the garden last spring.

Each year I buy egg cases from my local garden center so they are in my garden.
