Longhorn cactus beetle

Moneilema sp.

Description:

Black, flightless beetle that spends its time primarily on cactus. It feeds on the plant and lays its eggs either in the body of the plant or at the base, where the larvae can feed on it.

Habitat:

Found on cholla cactus

Notes:

This beetle was located in the parking area of Carlsbad Caverns. Unfortunately, this is the only shot I have of it.
