Gray Kingbird

yrannus dominicensis

Description:

Thick relatively long straight black bill, black eyes and black feet. White breast and belly. Gray head and back feathers (like it’s name!), with outer most feathers dark. Crested head feathers, like Eastern Kingbird. ...Bold. When I stopped, it flew out of low brush towards me. It perched out in open - about one car length away. It called from both of its perches with high pitched trills/rattles.

Habitat:

Roadside, as is typical for kingbirds. This one was at corner of 55 mph highway and residential road that dead-ended at the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge.

Notes:

Outside of its range. Widespread in the Caribbean, and sometimes seen in coastal areas of Florida. After I found, 40+ birders flocked to see it over 5 days. At least one drove from 200 miles to see it. https://ebird.org/hotspot/L10402886?yr=a...
