Peanut Bug

Fulgora laternaria

Description:

A large 8 cm long insect with stiff wings that resemble plastic. The head resembles an unshelled peanut, hence the name.

Habitat:

Common on trees in the Amazon rainforest of SE Ecuador.

Notes:

FYI - The local natives have an interesting superstition that says this insect stings them. They don't know the difference between a stinger and an opositor. According to the superstition, any man "stung" must "become intimate" with the first woman he sees or risk death. I'm sure it isn't hard to figure out where that superstition came from . Some guy thought a poor excuse is better than none.
