Colaptes auratus
northern flickers are found all across most of the usa and canada. They have a black-striped gray back with a speckled stomach and a small red patch along the back of the neck. They are a subspecie of the northern flicker
this bird was spotted underneath our pine tree fervently pecking at...??? possibly some nuts. every 10 seconds he would look up for 2 seconds and resume. it was fun to watch :)
