Syzygium jambos
Medium sized tree with powderpuff- type white blossoms. Fruits are green. Leaves are long and tapering. The flowers attract bees that find it difficult to negotiate between the individual filaments of the puffs.
By the side of a natural pond and village path in Belun village, near Katwa. West Bengal.
The eco resort guys could not tell me the name...just that the fruit was not edible. This is strange because the flower and the unripe fruit looks a lot like: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syzygium_j...
May be to get rid of my persistent questions...because roseapple is sold at a premium in Kolkata and there is no way a villager would not have known. I had never seen a roseapple tree or unripe fruit....well, now I know.
You're welcome SukanyaDatta. Probably because the fruit doesn't look appealing or nobody had dared to taste it yet. I don't know...what do you think?
Thanks Francis Floe. So, it IS Rose apple. I wonder why the villager said it was inedible.
