Viola Sororia
A perennial with heart-shaped leaves and purple flowers, most commonly 2 to 5 inches tall.
Edge of forest near house. Common blue violet is found throughout the eastern United States and Canada.
Pamela - I'm pretty good about getting the leaves but this little guy didn't have any visible! Just went out to look again and they've barely formed.
Getting pics of a plants leaves helps tremendously when trying to get a good id.
Thanks for the help! I'll keep an eye on it to see if I can't narrow it down.
Definitely a Viola, likely V. sororia, the other petal is there just obscured from view, you can just make out one edge of it folding down.
That's a little wild violet - there should be a petal down front between the bottom 2 visible in this pic that may be damaged or eaten :)
