Spotted Salamander

Ambystoma maculatum

Description:

A relatively large member of the family Ambystomatidae (Mole Salamanders), adults may reach up to 25 cm in length. Adults are generally dark gray to black, with yellow spots running down the back. Often, the spots on the head are orange, in certain populations. They are not often seen in the open, the best way to find them is to flip logs or leaf litter. They breed in vernal pools, only in pools without fish.

deciduous forest with vernal pools

Notes:

Found near vernal pool under a log.
