Loxia leucoptera
White-winged Crossbills are a finch that breeds in the boreal forest of Canada and Alaska. They are irruptive in the winter in the northern half of the US, in search of good pine crops. The cross bill is specially equipped to open the pine cones to feed on the seeds.
The first picture is a male, and the second is the female.

Thanks Maria. These birds allowed very close approach, and I even heard that some landed on the photographers taking their pictures.
