Rhus glabra

Description:

Upright shrub, 8-10 feet tall. Flowers and fruits in dense clusters at ends of branches. Leaves pinnate, with lanceolate leaflets. Leaves and fruit clusters brilliant red in fall.

Habitat:

Banks of Deschutes River, north-central Oregon. In a broad flat floodplain, about two miles upstream from confluence of Descutes and Columbia rivers. Moist but well-drained soil in full sunshine.

Notes:

Deschutes River State Recreation Area. Much of this area was burned in extensive range fires the preceding summer, but habitat immediately along the river was mostly spared.
