There were many of these vessel-shaped things embedded in the trunk of a tree. The open top is geometrically a perfect circle.
On a tree inside the sprawling campus of the Kolkata zoo.
Initially I thought a woodpecker had used this tree as a store and I came close to take a look. Is this a sort of cocoon...because something surely came out of it. Some looked collapsed but most held their shape pretty well.

Thank you Sukanya.
Thanks, Nuwan.
empty cocoons - Limacodidae
Mark, I have definitely seen this insect...when I was in Delhi. I will post it as a spotting shortly. Sorry, (shame-face icon) missed noting the tree...may be I will go back in winter and take a look again. Thanks.
This is another spotting of mine from yesterday but it is made from a totally different material and in a different location - http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/183...
Take a look at the 4th image in this spotting - http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/736...
They look very similar in shape and material to mine spotting Sukanya
What type of tree? Maybe in this list http://www.nbair.res.in/insectpests/Para...
Thanks, Rbum.
Probably a type of Digger wasp cocoon. Digger wasps put their young in small mud homes then take care of them by protecting and feeding them caterpillars.
