Description:

Sabal palmetto is a tree that grows up to 65 ft in height (with exceptional individuals up to 92 ft in height, with a trunk up to 2 ft diameter. It is a distinct fan palm.

Habitat:

It is native to the subtropical and warm temperate southeastern United States as well as Cuba, and the Bahamas. In the United States it was originally found near the coast throughout most of Florida and north to the coast of North Carolina. This one was photographed at Brookgreen Gardens near Murrells Inlet, SC.

Notes:

It is also known as palmetto, cabbage palm, cabbage palmetto, palmetto palm, blue palmetto, Carolina palmetto, common palmetto, swamp cabbage, and sabal palm. It is the state tree of South Carolina and Florida.
