Hexastylis arifolia var arifolia

Description:

Perennial herb with smooth, heart-shaped leaves and underground rhizomes. Stem/rhizome emits a pleasant, spicy "root-beer" scent when cut/broken. Jug-like flowers are formed at the end of rhizomes (not seen here).

Habitat:

Mostly shaded, moist forest floor (dense mixed hardwoods) surrounded heavily by mulch.
