Asian Water Monitor

Varanus salvator

Description:

It approached as it swam with just its head above water and its forked tongue very much evident. I really thought it was a large snake...and then I saw its limbs and knew it was a common water monitor....I seem to see them almost everywhere I go!

Habitat:

A waterbody in Ayutthaya near Bangkok. This is a large town with ancient ruins and lots of tourists and locals. There is a cafe right on the water's edge and the open air section actually was very close to where the water monitor surfaced. Habitat shot is the last shot. There are fishes here and birds like Pond heron, Egret and Openbill stork. We thought it was stalking the Heron because it seemed to be making a beeline for it...but no, it just swam about in the large lake.

Notes:

Apparently a few months earlier a 100kg water monitor had entered a house here! The dog went bonkers.
