Owlfly

Description:

This is a common owl fly that visited my room attracted to the artificial lights one night. Have a thick yellow-orange band extending from the head all the way to the abdomen tip. Although this species is the most common owlfly species, they are rarely seen in urban areas. I have only seen an owlfly 3 times so far. They are quite fierce, one chewed on by fingers when I caught it. Nevertheless, they are not dangerous.

Habitat:

Usually in forests but one was found in the nearby oil palm plantation. Larvae (look like antlions) lives on tree barks. Spotted this one in Taman Semarak, Tawau, Sabah.

Notes:

Owlfies can be mistaken as a dragonfly by inexperienced people, many locals here does not even know about their existence. Sorry for the messy background in the images. I had just finished uploading spottings from Balung, for the next few weeks, I will be uploading not-so-interesting species spotted in my neighbourhood. >>>Map accuracy : 250m diameter.
